USA lifts travel ban
US President Barack Obama announces the end of the 22-year policy prohibiting people living with HIV from travelling and emigrating to the USA. The lifting of the ban is officially implemented on 4 January 2010. Other countries follow suit, with South Korea, China and Namibia all lifting their restrictions on travel for people living with HIV in 2010. Following this landmark policy shift, it is decided that the 2012 International AIDS Conference will be held in Washington, DC.
