Win for PrEP funding battle
In the United Kingdom (UK), the National AIDS Trust wins their appeal against NHS England. The court ruled that the NHS has the power to pay for pre-exposure prophylaxis – a drug that protects against HIV infection. This decision means that PrEP must be considered for funding in the UK. The National AIDS Trust successfully argues that the drug is a cost saving measure, as HIV care for one person costs the NHS approximately £360,000 over the course of a lifetime. This ruling is an important step in bringing forward the end of the HIV epidemic in the UK.
