Global Fund

The idea of a ‘global fund’ to dramatically increase funding for the HIV response emerges from discussions between donor governments, the UN and other international agencies in 1999. Likened by some to Europe’s post-war ‘Marshall Plan’, the idea is discussed at the United Nations in June 2001 and endorsed at the G8 summit that July. By April 2002 it has approved proposals worth US $600 million in 36 countries. By 2016, the fund has distributed more than US $30 billion to countries and communities in need.
