Durban AIDS conference
This is the first conference to be held in a developing country and a country with one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world. A key focus is the devastating impact of the epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa and the huge disparity in access to treatment between developed and developing countries. 5,000 scientists also publish the ‘Durban Declaration’, confirming the overwhelming scientific evidence about the causes of AIDS in response to denialist comments from South African president Thabo Mbeki and his health minister.
