Oldest known person with HIV dies at 100

The oldest documented person living with HIV, known as ‘The Lisbon Patient’, dies at age 100. ‘Miguel’, from Lisbon, Portugal, was diagnosed with HIV in 2004 when he was 84, after doctors discovered he had rare forms of colitis and lymphoma and a low CD4 count. After undergoing chemotherapy, he started taking antiretroviral treatment (ART) and achieved an undetectable viral load. Miguel’s story highlights how, with effective treatment, many people living with HIV are staying healthy into old age.
