Millennium Development Goals end

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are launched in 2000 by world leaders to combat poverty in developing countries. One of the eight goals is to halt and reverse the spread of HIV and AIDS. This concerted international effort means new HIV infections fall by approximately 40% between 2000 and 2013. By 2015, 17 million people living with HIV are receiving antiretroviral treatment globally - an immense increase from just 800,000 in 2003. HIV treatment averts 7.6 million AIDS-related deaths between 1995 and 2013.
