Ban on surgeons with HIV lifted

The UK allows doctors living with HIV to perform surgery for the first time since the 1990s. The new policy applies to medical professionals with an undetectable viral load, which means that they cannot transmit the virus. To assess this the National Health Service begins to keep a confidential register that monitors the viral loads of doctors, dentists and nurses with HIV. The change in policy is viewed as a positive step in tackling stigma towards those living with HIV.
