ACT-UP founded
Men affected by the HIV epidemic form ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) in New York. Led by Larry Kramer, a gay activist playwright, the organisation is committed to direct action to end the HIV and AIDS crisis. Its demands include better access to drugs as well as cheaper prices, public education about HIV and the prohibition of HIV-related discrimination. On 24 March it holds the first of many mass demonstrations on Wall Street.
