Memorial quilt
Gay rights activist Cleve Jones makes the first panel for the AIDS Memorial Quilt, in memory of his friend Marvin Feldman, early in 1987. Since then, more than 48,000 quilt panels have been made to commemorate someone lost to HIV. The quilt has periodically been shown on the Mall in Washington DC in the USA – the first time was in October 1987.
