COVID-19 stalls global HIV progress

The new UNAIDS 2022 report ‘In danger’ highlights that while new HIV infections fell globally in 2021, the drop was only 3.6% compared to the previous year – the smallest annual reduction since 2016. The number of people on HIV treatment also grew more slowly in 2021 than it had for over a decade. Despite many challenges, however, the report celebrates “robust” declines in annual HIV infections in the Caribbean, and in western and central Africa (particularly Nigeria).
