First global meeting

The WHO convenes the first meeting to assess the global AIDS situation in November. At the meeting, it is reported that AIDS is present in the USA, Canada, 15 European countries, Haiti and Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo), as well as in seven Latin American countries. There has also been one case in Australia and a suspected case in Japan. The meeting marks the start of the global surveillance of AIDS by the WHO.
