DATA: New infections in children
New HIV infections among children peaked at half a million in 2001. The advent of effective antiretroviral treatment and the roll-out of prevention of mother-to-child transmission programmes has dramatically cut the number of new infections. In recent years, several low- and middle-income countries, including Cuba, Thailand, and Belarus, have successfully eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
