UNAIDS 3 by 5 initiative

UNAIDS and the World Health Organization launch the 3 by 5 initiative to get three million people living with HIV in low- and middle-income countries on treatment by the end of 2005. It is a step towards the goal of universal access to HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment. Though the number of people receiving ART more than trebles, from 400,000 in December 2003 to 1.3 million at the end of 2005, the target is not achieved.
