Epidemic in Eastern Europe
At the end of 1995, the 15 countries of the European Union account for an overwhelming 92.8% of all HIV infections reported across Eastern and Western Europe. Two years later the situation changes dramatically – the number of people living with HIV in Eastern Europe increases more than fivefold, with around 190,000 infections. Ukraine, Russia and Belarus account for about 90% of all new cases – the majority among people who inject drugs.
