Zimbabwe approves injectable PrEP

In October 2022, Zimbabwe becomes the first non-high-income country to approve injectable PrEP for people at high risk of HIV. PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV infection. People will be able to get the injection of the drug cabotegravir (CAB-LA) every two months (after getting the first two injections one month apart), rather than needing to take an oral pill every day. Later in the year, South Africa announces that it will begin trialling injectable PrEP for adolescent girls and young women in 2023, and Uganda approves the use of both injectable PrEP and a PrEP vaginal ring.
