Workplace policies
Anglo American recognises at an early stage the threat of HIV and AIDS on its workforce in South Africa. It appoints an AIDS Education Advisor to promote an HIV strategy based on awareness, education and prevention, with programmes led by peer educators. Its first workplace policy also includes the declaration that HIV testing is not mandatory for its workforce – progressive for the time and in contradiction to the government’s advice.
