UNAIDS launched

On 1 January, the World Health Organization’s Global Program on AIDS is replaced by UNAIDS, a new UN body bringing together six (now ten) co-sponsoring UN organisations.

Two years in the making, UNAIDS is established to advocate for global action on the epidemic and co-ordinate and strengthen the way the UN responds on HIV and AIDS. Not without criticism, UNAIDS nevertheless provides leadership and a sustained focus on the epidemic rarely seen before.
