South Africa treatment programme
South Africa begins a programme to give out free antiretroviral treatment (ART) after years of confusion and delays. This is a breakthrough for the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) which, as part of its ongoing campaign, files manslaughter charges against the Health and the Trade and Industry ministers in South Africa in 2003. TAC holds the ministers responsible for the deaths of 600 people a day whose lives could have been saved had they had access to ART.
