New combined PrEP and contraceptive pill could be a gamechanger

Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe start government-backed implementation studies into a new dual prevention pill containing both pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and combined hormone contraceptive.

The new prevention pill could be a gamechanger due to its convenience and potential to overcome stigma because there is generally more acceptance of the contraceptive pill than there is of PrEP.

If the implementation studies show positive results, the dual prevention pill will then need national regulatory approval before being introduced – further expanding the options for women who want to reduce their risk of unintended pregnancy and HIV.
