London declaration on AIDS prevention

Symbolising the symbiotic relationship between the British response and the World Health Organization, a summit in London hosts delegates from 148 countries, three-quarters of whom are ministers. The international atmosphere has changed, and African countries are more willing to acknowledge AIDS – particularly after President Kaunda of Zambia’s announcement, in October 1987, that his son had died of AIDS. The resulting London Declaration on AIDS Prevention emphasises education and the need to protect human rights and dignity.
