Global co-ordination

The new Special Programme on AIDS is launched to help co-ordinate the global response to HIV. Headed up by American public health professional Johnathan Mann between 1986 and 1990, the primary objectives are to implement screening for blood supplies, train medical staff on the management of AIDS, provide public education and prevent discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS.
