Gleneagles 2005

During the UK’s presidency of the G8 governmental forum, Prime Minister Tony Blair pushes for Africa and HIV to be prioritised. At the Gleneagles summit, the UK secures a commitment from G8 countries to getting "as close as possible to universal access to treatment” by 2010. The commitment follows years of advocacy by HIV campaigners. United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan later credits the G8 commitment with allowing 5.4 million people to receive treatment.
