Drug use in prisons

AVERT begins shifting its focus to fund social research projects alongside medical research with the aim of understanding more about behaviours that put people at risk of HIV infection.

As a result of two studies looking at drug use and HIV in prisons, the UK Department of Health commissions AVERT to carry out a study concerning the provision of safer sex education for drug users. With funding from the Department of Health, AVERT later produces a training pack for people working in drug service entitled ‘Sexual Health Promotion with Drug Users’, which is published in 1995.
