Cuba eradicates mother-to-child transmission

Cuba is the first country in the world to completely eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV. In 2013, only two babies contracted HIV from their mothers in Cuba. Cuba’s success comes despite a relative lack of resources in its healthcare system and represents an important step towards an AIDS-free generation. The World Health Organization’s director general, Margaret Chan, calls it “one of the greatest public health achievements possible”.
