China’s epidemic
China’s first AIDS-related death occurred back in 1985, but cases of HIV thereafter are sparse. Surveillance of the epidemic started in 1986, but it isn’t until 1989 that clusters of HIV infections are identified in the country - the first being among people who inject drugs from minority populations, in the southern province of Yunnan.
