Burundi epidemic

Retrospective analysis of 658 blood specimens taken from a haemorrhagic fever study in Burundi shows that HIV had reached epidemic level by 1980. In the capital, Bujumbura, HIV prevalence is already 7.6% at this time. From then on into the 1980s, Burundi witnesses an increase in common opportunistic infections now attributed to AIDS.
