Botswana’s treatment programme

Botswana is the first African country to launch a national antiretroviral treatment project. Masa, meaning new dawn, offers free treatment to all those needing it. The programme raises the number of people receiving ART dramatically from 3,500 in 2002 to more than 200,000 in 2012 and reduces mortality rates. This success proves that ART programmes are feasible in low-income African countries.
