First AIDS cases in India

As a topic for her dissertation, a young doctor, Sellappan Nirmal, collects samples from sex workers and other groups at risk of HIV in Chennai. Several of her blood samples from sex workers come back as positive for HIV – reconfirmed by further testing in the USA. Up until this point, AIDS has been seen as a western scourge in India. It soon becomes clear that HIV has no borders.
