Brazilian generics law
While there is some small-scale antiretroviral (ARV) production in Brazil prior to 2000, it isn’t until the Generics Law is passed in 1999 that the regulatory framework exists for wide scale production of generics. With a strong domestic pharmaceutical industry, they are able to legally produce some, but not all, ARVs patented before Brazil implemented TRIPS in 1996. Still needing to acquire drugs internationally, Brazil becomes known for deals made with pharma to drive down drug costs.
