CAPRISA microbicides trial
The results from a clinical trial of an antiretroviral microbicides gel shows that the gel can cut HIV transmission by 54% if used correctly. The microbicide gel is designed to be applied by women before and after sex. As an HIV prevention method that women can initiate and control, it is a particularly important breakthrough. Unfortunately, later trials show that adherence is a major stumbling block for the effective use of microbicide gel.
