Treatment trial breakthrough
There are more developments on the treatment front in August 1989, when the results are announced of a major drug trial known as ACTG019. ACTG019 is a trial of the drug AZT, and it shows that AZT can slow the progression to AIDS in HIV-positive individuals with no symptoms at all. The findings herald a major breakthrough.
