Second HIV drug pre-approved
The second drug available for the treatment of HIV and AIDS is made available by the USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on compassionate access grounds for people who fail treatment using zidovudine (AZT). Limited testing had been done on the drug, but impassioned pleas from people with AIDS' advocacy groups for further treatment options meant that the experimental drug could be used with close monitoring from physicians.
