Nelson Mandela's son dies

Nelson Mandela announces that his son, Makgatho Lewanika Mandela, has died of AIDS-related illnesses. In an effort to challenge widespread stigma, Mandela calls for publicity to be given to HIV and AIDS, saying that this is the only way for the disease to be recognised as a "normal illness, like TB, like cancer."
