Generic drugs
Indian drugs company Cipla offers to sell a generic version of triple combination HIV treatment to Medecin Sans Frontieres (MSF) for US $350 per patient per year, on the proviso that MSF distributes it for free. The cost is a fraction of the US $10,000 the drugs cost in the US and Europe. Cipla also offers the drugs to governments for US $600 per year. The move increases pressure on the pharmaceutical industry to cut drug prices to developing countries, but also raises tensions over patent laws.
