First combination pill

Combivir is the first fixed dose combination antiretroviral pill. It is made up of two Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs) which block the action of an enzyme in the human body needed by HIV in order to multiply. Prior to this, HIV treatment consists of several pills. Simplifying the treatment to one pill a day makes it easier to adhere to treatment. Combivir’s patent ran out in 2005 and cheaper generic versions are now available.
