East Africa

After HIV begins establishing itself in Kinshasa and the surrounding areas, it moves to East Africa, most likely along the historic trade routes of the Congo. While no stored blood from East Africa before the late 1970s indicates that HIV was present, incidence of Kaposi’s sarcoma may suggest presence in Uganda. The first retrospectively verified case of HIV in Rwanda was in a pregnant woman and her family in 1977.
