AIDS orphans in southern Africa
The HIV epidemic is responsible for leaving vast numbers of children orphaned or made vulnerable by the loss of one or more parents to AIDS. Nowhere is this more acute than in sub-Saharan Africa, where whole generations are lost. In Zimbabwe, 16% of all children are orphaned by AIDS. The figures are 13% in Lesotho and 12% in Botswana and Swaziland.
